New reserve opened for rare penguin
The world's rarest penguin found only in New Zealand has a new haven thanks to DOC and the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust.
A wildlife reserve has been opened in South Otago to protect the bird.
The yellow-eyed penguin is so rare that there are fewer than 500 breeding pairs left in the world.
Now, 50 hectares of land along a South Otago coastline has been secured to ensure the birds' future.

Anguished penguin
A pair of penguins in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province became withdrawn and anxious after the egg they were hatching was smashed in a fight with other jealous penguins, according to sources with the Polar Museum of Harbin.
The female penguin laid an egg on Nov. 3. This led to jealousy among other penguins in the zoo, who lingered around the mother waiting for their opportunity to strike.
Jealousy finally turned to violence at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, when the female penguin was absent. A fat penguin jumped onto the hatching area, jostled away the penguin father and tried to take away the egg. The angry father immediately blocked the way of the looter. Unfortunately the egg dropped in the fight and was broken.
The saddened couple refused to eat after the tragedy and shunned their fellows. They appeared irritable and restless.

The nature of humans
Photo by Angie Scott. Her comment, "The captain of our Russian icebreaker wedged his ship against the ice in Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea, so we could step off. Almost immediately, a young emperor penguin appeared. We were probably the first humans it had ever seen. The picture I took is a statement on our world, its wild inhabitants and the nature of humans."
Weighing about the same as domestic sheep, emperor penguins are the largest of the penguins. To protect against the cold, they huddle together in groups. They breed during the long darkness of the Antarctic winter, but instead of building a nest the male keeps the egg on its feet, covering it with a warm fold of abdominal skin.

Good news on Southern Rockhopper penguins
Scientists reported in September that the population of Southern Rockhopper penguins on Isla Noir, the most important colony for the Eudyptes chrysocom family in all of South America, has risen to 316,000. This is a highly positive sign, given the significant drop in the species' population in previous decades.
Best known for their large, yellow crests, the Southern Rockhopper has been able to live on Isla Noir in relative isolation due to the heavy rain and winds that are typical of the island.

World's Largest Penguin: Cut Bank, Montana
To commemorate its hometown's status as the coldest town in the United States, this concrete penguin was constructed in 1989. At 27 feet tall and a solid five tons, it beckons to passersby from its spot in front of the Glacier Gateway Inn, a furniture-shop-turned-motel.
The penguin talks (when its speaker works), bleating out the slogan, "Welcome to Cut Bank, the Coldest Spot in the Nation!"

And the Penguin goes to …
Major Megan McClung of Coupeville, Washington, has touched the hearts of many people, for many different reasons. As a public affairs officer in Iraq in 2006, she organized the Marine Corps Marathon for those Marines overseas taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was part of the Marine Corps family, the Naval Academy family and the family of the running community. She was killed on Dec. 6 by a roadside bomb last year in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. This year at the Marine Corps Marathon, a new award was given in her honor: The Penguin Award.
Somehow Megan had gotten her hands on “The Penguin Chronicles,” a series of articles written by John “The Penguin” Bingham, who currently writes for Runner’s World. In Bingham’s articles, he lends human qualities to a penguin that runs for the joy of it rather than for a first place medal. Megan’s mother said she really must have taken that to heart when she organized the Marine Corps Marathon competition in Iraq in 2006.
“She called and asked us to send her a stuffed penguin,” said her mother, Re.
Since the penguin, named Paul, was going overseas, McClung’s parents decided to cut him orders and ship him off “military style.” That penguin was awarded to the final finisher in the marathon in Iraq, symbolizing that even though that runner crossed the finish line last, he’s still a winner because he didn’t give up.
This year that tradition carried on to the marathon in Washington. read more ...
